Nucleus
The nucleus is the "brain" of the cell that contains all genetic info of the cell.
Structure:
The nucleus consists of:
-The Nuclear Membrane: A double-layered structure that goes around the nucleus. The outer layer is connected to the Rough ER.
-Nuclear Pores: The sites for exchange of large molcules between the nucleus and cytoplasm. (only RNA can exit nuclear pores during the protein pathway)
-Nucleolus: Dense, spherical shaped structure inside the nucleus. Holds the information needed to make ribosomes.
-Chromosomes and Chromatin: Present in the form of strings of DNA and protein molecules.
Function:
-"brain" of the cell
-controls the hereditary characteristics of an organism
-responsible for protein synthesis, cell division, growth, and differentiation
-has the information needed to make ribsosomes (stored in the nucleolus)
